Cruzar la Cara de la Luna

Theoretical Opera Concept: A project cultivated with wonderful design team David Toro (Stage Director), Elizabeth Mak (Projections), Erin Fleming (Lighting), and Michael Krauss (Scenic). est. 2020

Summarization

In early August, a team of us got together to create a beautiful design concept for the Mariachi Opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. To begin we discussed our own personal connections with the story line and used those moments to help us better understand the world in which we wanted to create. Cruzar is usually portrayed as story about immigration, but after careful consideration we believed the story was more about family, loss, generations in America and in Mexico. its a reflection encompassing a journey of the Monarch Butterfly.

Costume Design Concept

My approach to the costume design derived from the idea of the Monarch Butterfly. Doing research on the Butterfly and seeing its journey, the colors it displays, places it finds time to rest all very colorful and yet had a various black outlines. with that in mind we have a few characters who help narrate the story and others who live the story. The mariachi band, nuns, priest, etc. are very important part of story telling, they help guide the story, the same as a monarch outlines. Everything inside are the bright colors that are the people living to tell the story. and on the reverse side of the butterfly are more muted tones which reflect on the current present day costumes.
